Mindful Monday: The Power of Letting Go
Sometimes letting go isn't about not caring.
It's about caring without carrying what was never yours to control.
We all have moments when our minds become tangled in things we cannot change.
Someone's words.
Someone else's behaviour.
A situation that didn't go the way we hoped.
Something that happened in the past.
Worry about what might happen next.
And sometimes, our emotions can feel just as overwhelming.
Anger. Anxiety. Disappointment. Sadness. Frustration.
Mindfulness doesn't ask us to push those feelings away or pretend everything is okay.
It asks us to notice them. Feel them. Make space for them, without allowing them to take over.
What is within your control?
A helpful mindfulness practice is thinking about your Circle of Control.
You may not be able to control:
What other people say or do
How someone feels about you
What has already happened
Other people's choices
The outcome of every situation
Everything that happens around you
But you can influence how you respond.
You can pause before reacting.
You can choose your words.
You can step away.
You can set a boundary.
You can breathe.
You can decide where you place your energy.
And sometimes, the most powerful response is simply:
βThis is happening. I don't have to control it. I can choose how I move through it.β
ποΈ Letting go doesn't mean letting everything go unanswered.
It doesn't mean tolerating unhealthy behaviour, ignoring your needs, or giving up your boundaries.
Sometimes letting go means releasing the mental struggle with something you cannot change while still taking action where you can.
You can feel angry without becoming anger.
You can feel anxious without allowing anxiety to make every decision.
You can feel hurt without carrying the hurt all day.
You can acknowledge an emotion and gently remind yourself:
βI see you. I feel you. But you don't have to drive.β
πΈ A mindful letting-go practice
When you notice yourself becoming overwhelmed, pause and ask:
1. What am I feeling?
Name the emotion without judging it.
2. What am I trying to control?
Is it actually within your control?
3. What can I control right now?
Perhaps your breathing, your response, your next step, or a boundary you need to set.
4. What can I release for today?
You don't have to solve everything right now.
Take a slow breath in.
And as you exhale, imagine putting down something you've been carrying.
Not because it doesn't matter.
But because you matter too.
πΏ This Monday, practice letting go of what you cannot control β and gently returning your energy to what you can.
Sometimes peace doesn't come from changing the situation.
Sometimes it comes from changing our relationship with it.
